The rodeo hits a new low

calf roping rodeo

Who would have thought an event (I refuse to call this a sport), where men try to prove how tough they are by wrapping a rope around the neck of a baby animal, knocking them to the ground and dragging them could get worse? Surprise, it has.

To the cheers of the crowd, a teenage girl had a similar thing done to her at a Chilean rodeo. She entered the ring to peacefully protest the cruelty and was then roped and dragged from the ring. Any assault charges filed? None that I have heard of so far. In fact here is an example of the typical attitude regarding what happened; The Chilean Rodeo Federation's director "regretted what happened, but at the same time justified the attitude of the riders"

In a world where animals and females are regarded more or less as property, this isn't much of a surprise.

By now we have all heard of the cruelty involved in rodeos (animals with broken legs, broken backs, broken necks, etc), but we never hear about what goes on before the rodeo. We don't hear about the calves, horses and other animals that are choked, knocked down and dragged for hours on end, over and over, everyday, for practice. This goes on year round, not just for a day or two before the rodeo.

I'll never understand how men can enjoy abusing animals and then think of themselves as 'tough' and 'macho' for doing so. Why women would even want to compete to prove they are as 'macho' is beyond comprehension and very disappointing. I'm guessing mental illness or brain damage, from either a birth defect or some sort of trauma.

As for women who find these men attractive, they have probably been raised in families where the men are in rodeos, so for them it is the norm. I'm also willing to bet that most of those homes were very abusive and so they jump from an abusive home to an abusive husband, as that's all they know. It would be hard to believe that men who abuse animals for enjoyment, don't continue that same behavior at home, especially when they are getting some gratification from it.

I think what happened at the rodeo is a perfect example of how violence against animals leads to violence against people, most often women and children, as abusers usually only pick on those weaker.

rabbit eye after draize test

I was recently taking a shower when I got some soap in my eye. After frantically washing it out as quickly as possible because of the pain I started thinking about the infamous Draize Test
