I am so sick of hearing people say they feel sorry for Paula Deen because she has Type 2 diabetes. Oh, boo hoo, poor rich girl.

I just don't see what there is to feel sorry for. She found out she had the disease years ago, knew her diet contributed to it, yet kept promoting it just the same. Heaven forbid she should lose an endorsement deal for the unhealthy crap she was trying to pass off as food. Why should she care if people listen to her and sick?

But, she did finally come clean about her health. That is, she did after she got an endorsement deal for a diabetic medicine.

So, I'm confused about what we are supposed to feel sorry about. Sorry that she continued to promote a diet that she knew first hand was unhealthy and harmful? Sorry that she knew people followed what she said and would buy things she recommended (hence the endorsement deals), no matter how bad it was for their health? Sorry that she has managed to find a way to make money off an illness she brought on herself? Sorry that she obviously has no qualms about passing along that disease to others who (gag) idolize her?

Maybe we are supposed to feel sorry for her for losing her soul, morals and ethics somewhere along that money highway she's been riding.

Give a gift that helps others this year

December 11th 2011 02:07
This year, do something different. Give a gift that will help others. Really, Aunt Shirley doesn't need another orange sweater and Grandpa Bob doesn't need another remote control holder. But there are charities that could use the donations to feed hungry, homeless children and families or help an elderly person with medical care for their pets (often their only companion).

Even better, let your children help with picking the gift. It's never too early to teach them compassion and caring over materialism. Is Cousin Marsha an animal lover? Let the kids decide which animal to adopt in her name. Does Brother Bill work in the medical field? Let the kids decide if a contribution should be made in his name to a children's hospital or to doctors without borders.

There is a non-profit to fit every person on your list. Here are a few:

For animal lovers -

Donate:

Humane Society

Best Friends Animal Society

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Your local animal shelter/humane society

Buy Gifts/Adopt an Animal:

Shop at the Humane Society

Donate a doghouse for dog that lives outside

Choice of 28 wild animals to adopt (includes plush version of the animal)

Sponsor an animal at Best Friends

Adopt/Sponsor a farm animal

Help others/families/children in need -

Doctors without Borders

Feeding America/Second Harvest (you can look for a local chapter in your area)

American Red Cross

Americares

Food not bombs

Wheelchair Foundation

This is just a tiny list, there are hundreds more out there. And don't forget, donations to non-profits are tax-deductible.

Guess what this is...

November 16th 2011 07:52
I thought it might be fun to play a game called "Guess what this is". I'm willing to bet you have no idea what this is or what it's used for.
Ready? Okay, guess what is in the picture below.

What is it?
What is it?

Not sure what they are? I'll give you a hint.

They contain a liquid called castoreum.

Still don't know? Okay, a few more hints....

The castoreum is used to give some foods a vanilla (or raspberry) flavor and is often used in vanilla ice cream.

Vanilla Ice Cream Cone

It is also used in some perfumes and cigarettes.

Give up?

They are the dried perineal glands of the beaver. They contain the castoreum which is used as a food additive and is usually listed as 'natural flavoring' in the ingredient list.

What's really in your fast food?

October 7th 2011 00:27
Very little actual food it seems and a whole lot of chemicals and additives. The number of ingredients in fast food is unbelievable and unnecessary. Here are a few examples:

KFC Chunky Pot Pies

This is a wonderful post from the blog Lost and Tired, written by Rob Gorski. Lost and Tired is Mr. Gorski's blog of his journey raising three autistic boys.

Last night I installed some new software. It was late at night and I wasn't paying much attention, so I didn't notice when the Ask toolbar was installed along with the software.

I noticed it made itself right home, changing my default search engine and home page without so much as a please or thank you afterwards. Like any unwanted house guest, it turned out to be quite difficult to remove

How tea partiers are created....

April 17th 2011 20:55
Have you ever listened to the nonsense spewed forth from a tea partier and wondered what in the world happened to them? Were they constantly dropped on their head? Is it some sort of brain virus? Inbreeding? How about being taught science from a creationist?
The following video shows some of those future tea partiers being created as we speak....

Now is your chance to do just that.

is inviting volunteers to look through data collected on hundreds of thousands of stars for patterns that could mean a planet is orbiting it

Do you know these people?

January 19th 2011 01:50
A man found a roll of film in the snow in Prospect Park, NY. He developed the film and is now trying to find the person who lost the film. Here is a video he made showing the pictures that were developed.

Would you give money to a group that lobbies against gay rights? Or one that is so anti-gay that they don't even allow gay people to volunteer for them? Well if you drop your change into the Salvation Army buckets on your way into or out of the stores this holiday, chances are that is exactly what you are doing.

Lately they have been in the news for accepting Harry Potter and Twilight themed items and then throwing them away instead of giving them out. They are 'unchristian' in their opinion and unworthy of being given to anyone. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But why accept something knowing full well you are going to throw it away. Why not just tell the person donating it that you can't accept the item, so that their time and money isn't going to waste? Oh that's right, because they think they get to decide what is right and wrong for everyone else in the world
