Draize Test
December 23rd 2009 22:51
I was recently taking a shower when I got some soap in my eye. After frantically washing it out as quickly as possible because of the pain I started thinking about the infamous Draize Test.
The Draize Test is what some companies use to test their caustic chemicals. It consists of using animals, usually rabbits, and either applying the substance to their skin after the fur has been shaved and several layers of skin removed, or it is put into their eyes and the eyes are held open with clamps. They are then usually put into some sort of restraint for several days while the results are observed.
There are acceptable alternatives to this test but the researchers seem to prefer torturing animals.
If you were to pour lye into a pet rabbits eye, then restrain it with its eye clamped open for days, you would be charged with animal cruelty. Yet companies do this to thousands of animals each year, usually on substances that have already been tested and retested.
After getting that tiny amount of shampoo in my eye and feeling that amount of pain, I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to have it concentrated and poured right into my eye, my eye clamped open, and have to feel that pain until I was finally killed days later.
Here is a list of companies that use this or equally unnecessary and cruel tests: Companies that Test
Here are the companies that do not test: Companies that Do Not Test
There are quite a few charities that also do cruel tests. What sewing newborn kittens eyes shut for weeks and the killing them has to do with kids in wheelchairs, I have yet to figure out.
Here you can search for a particular charity and see if they test or not: Charity Search
And here is a partial list of cosmetic and personal care companies that not only don't test on animals, but also don't use animal ingredients (unless noted): Cruelty-Free Cosmetics/Body Care
